While studying Mosiah 12-16 made me think of the importance of understanding the commandments. The people of King Noah never understood the law hey were supposed to teach. So, they never did, or at least they did not teach it right. This made me think that before being able to teach something, as part of a calling or to the people we know, fist we would need to understand and live the principles we are to teach. It is only after we do it that we will gain a testimony strong enough to invite others to keep the commandments. Otherwise those commandments would not make sense to us nor the people we teach them.
Even though that problem was one of the main reasons why the people of King Noah were not progressing, there was something more important than just keeping the commandments. Keeping them Is good and necessary to progress in this life and gain salvation. However, the forgot the reason why they commandments are so important, that is because by keeping them we can access the Salvation that can only come because of the Sacrifice Jesus did. He took our sins so that we would not have to suffer because of them. So even though the commandments are necessary we should not forget to keep Christ as the center of our lives. If we keep the commandments but forget him, the commandments by themselves will not have power enough for us to receive salvation. Faith in Jesus Christ, and it’s following actions are what can really save us. Our trust in Him is what will bring eternal salvation to us. He loved us enough to teach us to keep the commandments but he loved us more by paying the price of our sins. He only asks us to love Him enough to trust Him our lives.
